The Next Kumbh Mela: Location and Dates
The grand spectacle of Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, one of the world's largest religious congregations, concluded successfully in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after 45 days of sacred rituals, spiritual gatherings, and mass pilgrimages. This year's Maha Kumbh Mela set an unprecedented record, with approximately 66 crore devotees taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. This remarkable figure almost doubled the population of the United States, which stands at around 34 crore.
The next Kumbh Mela is scheduled to take place in Nashik, Maharashtra, in 2027. The religious gathering will be held at Trimbakeshwar, a sacred town located approximately 38 kilometers from Nashik. The city, situated on the banks of the Godavari River, is home to the renowned Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
According to official reports, Kumbh Mela 2027 will be held from July 17 to August 17. This month-long event will attract millions of devotees, sadhus, and spiritual seekers from across the globe, offering them a chance to take a holy dip in the Godavari River and participate in the various religious ceremonies.
Kumbh Melas follow a rotational schedule across four holy cities—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain—ensuring that at least one Kumbh is organized every three years. The different types of Kumbh Melas are as follows:
Since the previous Kumbh Mela was the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj (2025), the next Kumbh Mela (2027) follows the rotational cycle, placing Nashik as the next host city.
Speaking at the NASSCOM Technology and Leadership Forum 2025 in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced ambitious plans to incorporate cutting-edge technology in the 2027 Nashik Kumbh Mela. He emphasized that technology would play a crucial role in enhancing the pilgrimage experience, ensuring seamless crowd management, security, and providing a virtual experience for those unable to attend physically. This digital transformation is expected to set a benchmark for future religious gatherings, making the Kumbh Mela more accessible to devotees across the world.
The Kumbh Mela in Nashik is considered highly sacred as it is associated with the legend of the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). According to Hindu mythology, Nashik is one of the locations where the divine nectar (Amrit) fell while being carried by Garuda, the celestial bird. This makes the Nashik Kumbh an essential pilgrimage for those seeking spiritual enlightenment and divine blessings.
Trimbakeshwar is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India due to its association with the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The Godavari River, often called the Dakshin Ganga (Ganga of the South), is believed to cleanse devotees of all sins when they take a holy dip during the Kumbh Mela.
As the spiritual legacy of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj comes to an end, anticipation builds for the next sacred congregation—the Kumbh Mela 2027 in Nashik, Maharashtra, from July 17 to August 17. With the integration of advanced technology and the spiritual significance of Trimbakeshwar and the Godavari River, this event promises to be an unmissable opportunity for devotees to immerse themselves in faith, culture, and spirituality.
