Delhi to Kumaon: Distance and Drive Time

The figures below come from route guides that give approximate distances and times. Other sources differ by a few kilometres, so use them for planning, not for exact fuel or timing calculations.

How to Reach Kumaon from Delhi

1. By Road

  • Route 1: Delhi, Hapur, Moradabad, Rampur, Haldwani. One guide calls this the most popular and well-maintained route. It suits Nainital, Bhimtal, Almora and Mukteshwar.

  • Route 2: Delhi, Meerut, Najibabad, Kotdwar, Lansdowne, Ranikhet. A scenic, offbeat option through forest, and a good fit if Ranikhet is your first stop.

  • Timing: Leave early to beat Delhi traffic and reach the hills in daylight. Expect highway tolls.

2. By Train to Kathgodam

Kathgodam is the nearest railway station for Nainital, Almora, Ranikhet and Kausani. One guide lists these trains from Delhi. Check current timings before you book.

The overnight Ranikhet Express suits a Friday-night start. You reach the hills in the early morning with a full day ahead and no driving fatigue. From Kathgodam, take a shared cab or a private taxi.

3. By Bus and By Air

  • Bus: One guide notes buses to Kausani from Anand Vihar ISBT.

  • Air: Pantnagar is the nearest airport, and the same guide puts the cab ride from Pantnagar to Kausani at about 162 km. Jolly Grant in Dehradun is another option.

Nainital and Ranikhet Distance: A Route Map in Words

Looking for a Nainital Ranikhet Almora Kausani map? The towns form a loose loop through Kumaon. Use the order below as a simple map, and add a live map from your pickup point before you travel.

The loop in order: Delhi, then Kathgodam or Haldwani, then Nainital, then Ranikhet, then Almora, then Kausani, then back towards Kathgodam or Delhi. You can run it in either direction.

Nainital to Ranikhet Distance

About 58 km by road, roughly 2 hours, according to one distance site that calls the figure an estimate. Hill roads and traffic can stretch the time.

Most figures come from the national tourism portal, Wikipedia and tour operators, and they differ slightly between sources.

Nainital: The Lake Town (First Stop for Most Travellers)

Nainital sits at about 2,084 m around a lake that divides the town into Mallital in the north and Tallital in the south, with shopping areas at both ends. It is the easiest Kumaon base from Delhi, and it has the most to do in the least time.

What to See and Do in Nainital

  • Naini Lake: Boat rides on the lake and a walk along its edge. Plan about two hours.

  • Naina Devi Temple: On the northern shore of the lake. The temple was destroyed by a landslide in 1880 and rebuilt in 1883. Inside are shrines to Kali, Naina Devi and Ganesha. Read our full guide for history and timings.

  • Mall Road: The main promenade, busiest in late afternoon, with cafes, shops and hotels. One guide says traffic is banned from 6 to 9 PM in the season, so confirm before you plan a drive-in dinner.

  • Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat): About 4 km west of the lake, reached on foot or by horse, with views of the Himalayas and the countryside.

  • Snow View: A viewpoint reachable by horse from Mallital. A package listing also mentions a ropeway ride.

  • Naina Peak: The highest peak bordering the lake, at about 2,611 m.

Lakes Near Nainital

Package listings often add Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal as a half-day or full-day outing. They are quieter lakes in the Kumaon hills, and some are linked with paragliding and rock climbing. Ask your driver for current distances and drive times.

How Long to Stay in Nainital

Two nights is ideal for a first visit. One night works as a stop on a longer plan. If you add the lakes, allow a full extra day.

Ranikhet: The Calm Hill Town

Ranikhet is quieter than Nainital. It suits travellers who want walks, orchards, temples and open views without crowds. Peak season runs October to March, according to one guide, with April to June moderate and July to September off-season.

What to See and Do in Ranikhet

  • Chaubatia Gardens: A large orchard area, described by one guide as 600 acres with apple, peach, apricot and plum trees. Plan 2 to 3 hours.

  • Jhula Devi Temple: An 8th-century shrine to Goddess Durga, known for its many bells. Guides give 3 to 7 km from Ranikhet, so confirm the distance. Plan 1 to 2 hours.

  • Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum: A museum with photographs, weapons, medals, uniforms and flags, per one guide. Plan 1 to 2 hours. Confirm timings before you go.

  • Rani Jheel: A small artificial lake in the town, about 1 km from the centre, with boating.

  • Haidakhan Babaji Temple: A temple complex about 3 km from the centre, with guest houses.

  • Mankameshwar Temple: A temple built by the Kumaon Regiment.

  • Binsar Mahadev Temple: About 9 km from Ranikhet by one guide. See our Binsar Mahadev guide for details.

  • Bhalu Dam: A forest lake and picnic spot, about 5 km away. One guide says it is usually low except in the monsoon.

  • Golf Course: A hill golf course appears in several guides. One lists it at about 6,132 feet.

How Long to Stay in Ranikhet

One night is enough for the museum, Chaubatia and Jhula Devi. Two nights suit slow travellers who want walks and quiet.

Almora: Temples and Local Culture

Almora lies about 45 km from Ranikhet and about 63 km from Nainital. It is the best stop for temple lovers and food lovers. Highlights near the town include Kasar Devi Temple, Chitai Golu Devta Temple, Katarmal Sun Temple, Bright End Corner and Lal Bazaar, where you can try Bal Mithai. Jageshwar Dham is a longer half-day trip.

Our full Almora guide lists distances, timings and a ready plan. For a long weekend, Almora works as a half-day stop on the way to Kausani, with Chitai Golu Devta and Deer Park as short visits, as one package listing suggests.

Kausani: Himalayan Views and Slow Time

Kausani sits on a ridge with a wide panorama of snow peaks. The national tourism portal describes a view of roughly 300 km across the range, including Trishul, Nanda Devi and Panchachuli. Sunrises are a daily highlight, and clear mornings matter, so plan an early wake-up.

What to See and Do in Kausani

  • Anasakti Ashram: Mahatma Gandhi stayed here for 14 days in 1929 and wrote on "Anasakti Yoga". It is now a research and study centre with a prayer room. One guide lists visiting hours of 4 PM to 7 PM, so confirm before you go.

  • Sumitranandan Pant Museum: The poet's ancestral home, with manuscripts, draft poems and personal belongings.

  • Kausani Tea Estate: On Bageshwar Road, about 15 minutes from town by one guide. Tour the grounds and buy local tea.

  • Baijnath Temples: About 16 km north of Kausani, on the Gomti river, with a main Shiva shrine and smaller shrines. See our Baijnath guide for history and timings.

  • Rudradhari Falls: A waterfall of about 150 feet, with nearby caves linked to Shiva. One guide describes about 12 km by road plus a 2 km walk. Check the weather first.

  • Pinnath: A moderate 5 km trek to a small village temple.

How Long to Stay in Kausani

One night gives you a sunrise and one sightseeing circuit. Two nights let you add the temples, the falls or the tea estate without hurrying. Kausani is a place to slow down, so avoid packing it too tightly.

Mukteshwar: A Quiet Add-On

Mukteshwar is about 330 km from Delhi, at around 2,285 m by the national tourism portal. It is known for the Mukteshwar Dham temple, forests and views, and it suits travellers who want a quieter stop on the way to or from Nainital. Add it only if you have a fourth or fifth day.

Long Weekend Itineraries from Delhi

These are suggested plans. Adjust to your dates, holiday calendar and the weather. Times are approximate.

Plan 1: 3 Days and 2 Nights – Nainital and a Lake (Suggested)

  1. Day 1: Leave Delhi early, or take the overnight train and arrive at Kathgodam in the morning. Reach Nainital, check in and rest. In the evening, walk the lakefront, visit Naina Devi Temple and stroll Mall Road.

  2. Day 2: A day for the nearby lakes, such as Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal. Return for a ropeway or a viewpoint at sunset.

  3. Day 3: A late start, breakfast by the lake and a boat ride, then the return journey.

This plan keeps driving low, which matters on a short break.

Plan 2: 4 Days and 3 Nights – Nainital, Ranikhet and Kausani (Suggested)

  1. Day 1: Delhi to Nainital. Lake and Naina Devi Temple in the evening.

  2. Day 2: Nainital sightseeing, then drive to Ranikhet (about 2 hours) in the afternoon. Evening walk and Rani Jheel.

  3. Day 3: Morning at Chaubatia Gardens or the museum, then drive to Kausani (about 2 hours). Sunset views.

  4. Day 4: Sunrise in Kausani, then Anasakti Ashram or the tea estate. Start the return early, as the drive back is long.

The return is the weak point. Ranikhet to Delhi is listed at about 370 km and 9 hours by one operator, and Kausani to Delhi is about 413 km, so plan an early start or finish at Kathgodam and take a train.

Plan 3: 4 Days and 3 Nights – Nainital, Almora and Kausani (Suggested)

  1. Day 1: Delhi to Nainital.

  2. Day 2: Nainital sightseeing and the lakes.

  3. Day 3: Drive to Almora for Chitai Golu Devta and Deer Park, then on to Kausani.

  4. Day 4: Kausani morning, then the return.

Plan 4: 5 Days and 4 Nights – The Kumaon Loop (Suggested)

Choose this only if you have a longer break.

  1. Day 1: Delhi to Nainital.

  2. Day 2: Nainital and the lakes.

  3. Day 3: Nainital to Ranikhet. Chaubatia Gardens and the museum.

  4. Day 4: Ranikhet to Almora and Kausani. Sunset at Kausani.

  5. Day 5: Sunrise at Kausani and the return.

Plan 5: A Temple-Focused Weekend (Suggested)

  1. Day 1: Delhi to Nainital. Evening at Naina Devi Temple.

  2. Day 2: Drive to Almora. Chitai Golu Devta, Kasar Devi and Katarmal Sun Temple, as time and weather allow.

  3. Day 3: A longer day at Jageshwar Dham or Baijnath, then the return.

What About Munsiyari and the Full Circuit?

Packages that combine Nainital, Ranikhet, Almora, Kausani and Munsiyari run 7 nights and 8 days in at least one operator's listing. That listing shows Kausani to Munsiyari on one day and Munsiyari to Almora on another, and Munsiyari is a base for the Panchachuli views and for treks to the Ralam and Milam glaciers. That is too much for a long weekend.

If Munsiyari is on your list, save it for a week-long Kumaon trip. For a long weekend, choose two or three of the towns above.

Nainital Ranikhet Jim Corbett Tour Package: Does It Fit?

Jim Corbett National Park is in Ramnagar, Nainital district. One guide puts it at about 260 km from Delhi and 70 km from Nainital, and says the park covers about 520 sq km. Many operators combine Corbett with Nainital, Ranikhet, Kausani and Almora.

What to Know Before You Add Corbett

  • Season: One guide says November to May is the best time, with the park closed to visitors in the monsoon, June to October. Confirm dates with the forest department.

  • Safari zones: The same guide lists Dhikala, Bijrani and Dhela as core zones and Jhirna, Durga Devi and Sitabani as buffer zones.

  • Booking: The guide advises booking jeep safaris about 30 days ahead. Rules and availability change, so ask your operator.

  • Time cost: A safari needs early starts and a full morning or evening. On a long weekend, adding Corbett usually means dropping a hill town.

Nainital Ranikhet Kausani Tour Packages: What to Expect

Package listings vary widely. A typical Kathgodam-start listing from one operator includes:

  • Hotel stays at each stop.

  • Daily breakfast.

  • Pickup and drop at Kathgodam railway station or the airport.

  • All transfers by private car.

  • Sightseeing as per the itinerary.

The same listing keeps these as extras:

  • Airfare or train fare.

  • Lunch and dinner.

  • Insurance and taxes.

  • Any expense not in the inclusions.

Nainital Ranikhet Tour Packages: What to Check

  • Number of nights at each stop: One night at a town is mostly spent in the car.

  • Where you start and end: Delhi pickup, or Kathgodam station or airport pickup.

  • Hotel location: Near the lake in Nainital, or near the main viewpoints in Kausani.

  • Private car or shared: Ask for the vehicle type.

  • Cancellation terms: Check what happens if a road closes.

  • Written inclusions and exclusions.

  • Meals: Many listings include breakfast only.

Nainital Ranikhet Almora Kausani Tour Package from Kathgodam

A Kathgodam start skips the long highway drive from Delhi. You take the overnight train, reach the hills in the morning and begin the loop with a rested driver and a rested family. Kathgodam to Nainital is about 35 km, so you reach your first hotel quickly. Ask the operator whether the package ends at Kathgodam in time for your return train.

Nainital and Kausani Package: Is It Enough for a Long Weekend?

Yes. A 3-night plan with two nights in Nainital and one in Kausani is workable, but the drive between them is long. For fewer hours in the car, stay in one base and take day trips.

Red Flags When You Book

  • Prices that look far below other quotes, with no written inclusions.

  • A package that fits five towns into three days.

  • No clear answer on what happens if a road closes.

  • No written invoice or cancellation terms.

Best Time for a Kumaon Long Weekend

  • March to June: Pleasant weather, with warm, sunny days.

  • Late September to November: The clearest views, according to an Almora guide. Warmth fades quickly by November.

  • July to mid-September: Monsoon. Landslides can block hill roads, so add buffer days. See our monsoon guide for more.

  • December to February: Cold, with snow possible around late December and January.

Long weekends and holidays bring crowds and higher prices. Book your stay and train tickets early. If your dates are fixed, build one spare day into your plan.

What to Pack for a Kumaon Long Weekend

  • Warm layers. Evenings are cool even outside winter.

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip.

  • A light rain jacket or umbrella.

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen, since the hill sun is strong.

  • A power bank and offline maps.

  • Cash for small shops, local taxis and temple offerings.

  • Motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to it. Hill roads wind a lot.

  • Photo ID for every traveller.

Travel Tips for a Short Kumaon Trip

  • Pick fewer places: Two bases beat four.

  • Leave Delhi early, or take the overnight train.

  • Drive in daylight: Avoid hill roads after dark.

  • Keep a buffer on the way back: Hill roads can slow without warning.

  • Check weather and road status the morning you leave.

  • Dress modestly at temples and remove footwear where asked.

  • Confirm timings for temples, museums and ashrams before you go.

  • Carry out your waste: Mountain towns have limited waste systems.

What to Eat in Kumaon

  • Bal Mithai: Almora's signature sweet. Buy it fresh from a local shop.

  • Kumaoni meals: Ask for local dals, rice and vegetable dishes at cafes and family-run restaurants.

  • Local tea: Buy Kausani tea at the estate.

  • Hot snacks: Momos and chai at lakeside and ridge cafes.

Plan and Book Your Kumaon Long Weekend

  • Choose your dates and hold your train tickets early.

  • Choose your towns: Nainital alone, or Nainital with Ranikhet, Almora or Kausani.

  • Choose how you travel: Self-drive, train to Kathgodam, or a package with private transfers.

  • Get everything in writing: Ask for the inclusions, exclusions, hotels and cancellation terms.

  • Book with us: [ADD YOUR PACKAGE DETAILS, PRICE AND CONTACT HERE.]

Final Thoughts

A Kumaon long weekend works best when you do less. Choose Nainital for ease, add Ranikhet or Kausani for quiet and views, and keep a buffer for the road back. If you want temples, add Almora. If you want wildlife, add Corbett and drop a hill town. Book your stay and your train early, check what your package includes and leave Delhi before the traffic does.
