The Panch Kedar Yatra is one of the most spiritually uplifting pilgrimages in the Indian Himalayas. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the five sacred temples—Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar—are located in the serene Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Each temple has its own mythology, significance, and unique trekking experience.
Nagarjuna Travels curates a thoughtfully planned itinerary that allows travelers to explore all five Kedars comfortably while enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas. The journey combines spirituality, adventure, and cultural immersion, making it a remarkable experience for every devotee and nature lover.
Unlike regular pilgrimage routes, Panch Kedar requires devotion, patience, and a love for mountains. The temples are not directly accessible by road. Instead, the Yatra involves scenic treks through dense forests, remote villages, alpine meadows, and snow-clad peaks. According to legend, the Pandavas built these shrines while seeking forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Kurukshetra war.
This spiritual belief, combined with nature’s untouched beauty, makes the Panch Kedar Yatra a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
To give a clear overview, here is a simple and clean table for quick reference:
Your Panch Kedar Yatra begins at Haridwar or Rishikesh, where the team from Nagarjuna Travels welcomes you. After a short briefing, the journey proceeds towards Guptkashi. The drive is scenic, offering views of Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and the beautiful Mandakini River flowing alongside the road. Upon reaching Guptkashi, travelers settle in at the hotel and prepare for the Kedarnath trek scheduled for the next day.
The morning starts early with a drive to Sonprayag and further to Gaurikund, the base point for the Kedarnath trek. The 16 km trail winds through forests, waterfalls, and majestic mountains. Travelers may trek or hire ponies/helicopter assistance (subject to availability). On reaching Kedarnath, you feel the divine energy of Lord Shiva’s most revered Jyotirlinga. The evening aarti is a soul-stirring experience, especially with the snow-capped Himalayas surrounding the ancient stone temple.
After an early morning darshan at Kedarnath, you begin your return trek to Gaurikund and drive back to Guptkashi. The journey back is relaxed, allowing time to rest and rejuvenate. This night’s stay is crucial before beginning the higher-altitude treks towards other Kedars.
Today you drive to Chopta, popularly known as the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand.” Dense forests, open meadows, and clear skies make Chopta one of the most picturesque destinations in the region.
The trek to Tungnath begins from Chopta and gradually ascends through green valleys and panoramic Himalayan views. Tungnath, located at 3,680 meters, is the world’s highest Shiva temple. After darshan and enjoying the breathtaking scenery, you return to Chopta for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, the journey continues towards Sagar village, the starting point for the Rudranath trek. The trail is considered moderately difficult but extremely rewarding. It passes through high-altitude meadows, deep forests, Bugyals, and peaceful Himalayan villages. You reach the overnight halt point (Lyuti Bugyal / Panar Bugyal), known for its magnificent sunset views.
The final stretch of the trek leads to the sacred Rudranath temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped in his face manifestation. The temple surroundings are calm, mystical, and deeply spiritual. After darshan, you begin the descent back to Sagar village. Upon reaching, you drive to Mandal village for the night stay.
The morning begins with a scenic drive to Ransi, the base point for the Madhyamaheshwar trek. The trail to Madhyamaheshwar is a beautiful mix of thick forests, mountain streams, and traditional Garhwali settlements. By evening, you arrive near the temple area and explore the natural beauty around. The temple, dedicated to the middle torso of Lord Shiva, is located in a stunning mountain valley.
After attending the morning prayers at the temple, you begin the return trek to Ransi. From there, you drive towards Urgam Valley, a quiet, remote, and scenic region known for its apple orchards and Himalayan views. You check into a local lodge/homestay for a peaceful overnight rest.
The final Kedar, Kalpeshwar, is easily accessible compared to others. A short, pleasant trek leads you to the ancient Kalpeshwar temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped in his Jata (hair) form. After darshan, the journey continues to Joshimath. The evening is free to explore local markets or enjoy quiet moments in the mountain town.
Your Panch Kedar Yatra concludes with a scenic drive back to Haridwar or Rishikesh. River confluences, forested valleys, and charming villages accompany the return journey, leaving you with unforgettable memories of devotion and adventure.
The ideal time to undertake this Yatra is May to October, excluding the monsoon months of July and August. During these months, the weather remains clear, the trekking routes are open, and the spiritual ambiance of the Himalayas reaches its peak.
